10
makers cut-out image

Framework for the project:

The form of the silver to be randomly assigned to each maker — All the silver should be used; with no additional material added — No subcontracting; the object to by made by individual members of the group — The final object must be capable of being displayed on a 10cm perspex column — A one-word idea should be related to each design.

Comments on how the project was run - in retrospect:

10 was an ideal number, not much organisation was needed for the group to function. Individuals did not feel intimidated but there were enough of us to share the tasks — The first meeting was crucial. The project was defined at this meeting with us all together as a group, everyone felt ownership of the idea and was prepared to take responsibility for tasks that needed to be done — It was a new way of working; the material dictated the final result and random elements acted as a uniting force taking some of the responsibility away from the individual maker — The project was non-competitive so ideas were freely discussed; we learnt as much about ourselves as we did about other people in the group — There was no leader but someone in the background taking responsibility for the project staying on track. The project's structure was flexible enough to incorporate unexpected developments — There was a sociable atmosphere that made participation an enjoyable, positive experience — It would have been helpful to have a tighter time frame.
